Ripple is both a platform and a currency built on top of a distributed open source protocol, acting as a settlement system, currency exchange, and remittence network. Launched in 2012 by Ripple labs, the original authors are Arthur Britto, David Schwartz, and Ryan Fugger. By 2018, over 100 banks have signed up for Ripple services, primarily their XCurrent messaging technology. However, banks still avoid the XRP coin due to the ongoing volatile nature of cryptocurrencies. Due to financial institutions mainly participating in the maintenance of the ledger, some argue that Ripple is centralized.
