Estonian President, Kersti Kaljulaid, who returned after a week-long visit from the United States, on Saturday, March 7, refused to participate in the events marking the anniversary of the Estonian Congress, as she might have been in the same room as 2 coronavirus infected individuals while visiting the US.
In the first half of the week, Kaljulaid participated in the Congress of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) in Washington. The organizers of which said on Friday that two participants had been diagnosed with coronavirus. AIPAC organizers emailed Congress members that infected individuals arrived at the AIPAC meeting from New York.
“At the moment, we’ll find out whether they were at AIPAC together with those infected on the same day or in the same room”Spokeswoman for the Presidential Office Mailin Aasmäe.
Throughout the trip, the head of state and the delegation accompanying her took all necessary precautions, disinfection was constantly carried out, and the entire delegation followed the increased hygiene protocols. No one has any symptoms, everyone feels healthy.
The Presidential Chancellery consulted with the Department of Health and doctors. Upon their recommendation, it was decided that after arriving in Tallinn, the necessary tests should be done.
Today, the program included a speech by the president at an event in honor of the 30th anniversary of the Estonian Congress. But since by that time the test results were not yet ready, the president decided to cancel her visit, to minimize the possible danger of infecting others.
President Kaljulaid returned to Estonia on Thursday.
