COVID-19 cases top 500,000 worldwide

-

At a glance:

  • Global cases of COVID-19 top 500,000
  • US COVID-19 cases are growing faster than any other country
  • China reported zero new cases in Wuhan on March 18
  • Spain surpasses Italy in daily death toll

12:21PM EST – According to World-o-meter, one of the foremost authorities on tracking the unfolding COVID-19 outbreak in real time, it has just been reported the total amount of global cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has surpassed 500,000.

As of 12:21PM on Thursday the total number of coronavirus cases worldwide is at 500,542 according to World-o-Meter.

As of Thursday 12:21PM EST, the amount of new cases that have been confirmed is 29,574, bringing the global total to 500,542.

The global growth rate of COVID-19 is skyrocketing

On January 22, World-o-meter began tracking the coronavirus cases worldwide. On that day there were 580 confirmed cases in total, primarily isolated to mainland China.

From the 22nd of January the growth rate of the coronavirus has be growing geometrically. Below we illustrate the time of growth between milestones of 100,000 global cases of the coronavirus.

Milestones of 100K

  • January 22, 2020 – 580 cases reported worldwide.
  • March 6, 2020 (0 – 100K) – 102,050 cases reported worldwide. It took 45 days to get passed the 100,000 mark.
  • March 18, 2020 (100K – 200K) – 218,744 cases reported worldwide. It took 13 days to get passed the 200,000 mark from the 100,000 mark.
  • March 21, 2020 (200K – 300K) – 304,979 cases reported worldwide. It took 4 days to go from the 200,000 mark to break the 300,000 mark.
  • March 24, 2020 (300K – 400K) – 422,574 cases reported worldwide. It took 4 days to go from the 300,000 mark to go passed the 400,000 mark.
  • March 26, 2020 (400K – 500K) – over 500,000 cases globally. It took less than 3 days to go from the 400,000 mark to the 500,000 mark.

As we can see from the data above, the amount of time between these milestones is growing faster between each interval. If we continue down the same trajectory, very soon we will no longer be able to use days to measure milestones of 100,000. Instead milestones will be measured in hours.

Average Growth Rate:115.50%

Data provided by World-o-Meter

From the data above we can see that between March 1 and March 25, the average growth factor of the numbers is approximately 115.50%.

As long as this number is greater than 100% the number of COVID-19 cases will continue to grow world wide.

The goal is to get the number under 100% and then the number of cases globally will start to subside.

Egypt has recorded 542 cases and south Africa has recorded 927 total cases so far. South African just went into a lock-down of 56 million people and anyone not obeying the order can be charged with attempted murder. Ethiopia is set to release 4,000 prisoners from jail to help curb the spread of COVID-19.

Asia

The original epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak is showing signs of slowing the spread of the virus. It appears that social distancing measures and mass quarantining are working at flattening the curve.

China

For the most part China is reporting good signs of overall slowing the spread of the coronavirus. The original ground zero for the outbreak was the city of Wuhan.

Wuhan in the Hubei province is starting to open back up and has resumed public transportation as the city is coming back to life. According to Chinese National Health Commission (English translation required), for the first time since tracking the outbreak, there have been zero new cases of COVID-10 in the Hubei province on March 18, 2020.

Malaysia

According to FMT, cases of COVID-19 have tripled in 7 days, bringing the national total to —-. This is a drastic rise from 673 reported just 8 days ago.

Thailand

Thailand reported a total of 2,031 confirmed cases. As of Thursday Thailand is declaring a state of emergency for the entire country.

“Requirements will be announced the day after tomorrow. They will be issued on an ongoing basis to reduce the epidemic. Some will be requests for cooperation and others will be compulsory.”

Thailand Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha

Australia

Australia is at the bottom of the list in terms of coronavirus cases, but they seemed to have drastically jumped on the 22nd of March where 537 new cases were confirmed. This was up from 144 cases on the 21st of March. Since then the case rate seems to have dropped, but it does appear to be trending in an upwards direction.

Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson were both diagnosed with COVID-19 while in Australia earlier this month.

Europe

Europe still maintains the most cases of the coronavirus in the world, with Italy, Spain, Germany, France and Switzerland alone accounting for more than 209,643 cases between them. This accounts for approximately 41.88% of the total COVID-19 cases worldwide.

Italy & Spain

On Wednesday, for the first time since the onset of the deadly COVID-19 outbreak, the daily number of new deaths due to the coronavirus in Spain has surpassed that of Italy. Wednesday’s death toll in Spain was 738 while Italy was 683.

Germany

Germany has a total confirmed case count of 41,519. One interesting piece of information is that the death rate in Germany seems to be much lower than that of the rest of the world.

Germany is noticing a death rate of about 0.4%, which is 90% lower than the other countries such as the US, Spain and France.

North America

The coronavirus is spreading very quickly throughout North America.

As we can see from the table above the USA’s outbreak is growing faster than any other country, and if the trajectory continues, the US could have more infections than any other country inside of a week.

United States

The US has by far the the fastest growing confirmations of COVID-19 in the world. As of the time of this writing there were 6,771 cases of COVID-19 confirmed bringing the total to 74,982.

At the rate this is growing it will be less than 5 days from today before we cross the 1,000,000 mark of global infections (500K more cases), and less than 5 days after that to cross the 2 million mark (1 million more cases).

See Chart below to show the geometric growth assuming that there is a growth factor of 1.155 as it has averaged from the beginning of March. This is assuming starting with just 500,000 users today, as we know the amount is already bigger, but for the sake of keeping the math simple, we will make this supposition.

Without flattening the curve in 30 days we can expect to go from 500,000 to approximately 37,700,000 cases worldwide. It is very important at this point to practice social distancing and isolation to bring this 1.155 growth factor down as much as possible.

The bigger the growth rate, the faster the virus spreads and overwhelms the medical system, the smaller this number the more likely everyone is able to get proper medical treatment and allows time for the development of new therapies and vaccines.
