Global pandemic

Virtually every single corner of the globe has been hit by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Europe and the United States are the new epicenter of the outbreak. In Europe right now things are already beyond critical and many experts are expecting that most of Europe is still more than 30 days away from the worst of it.

EUROPE

Italy

Italy just surpassed 53,578 total cases with 793 deaths today which makes a total of 4,825 deaths. Italy has a very old population, and this is definitely one explanation for the high mortality rate in the country.

The average age of death by coronavirus infection in Italy presently stands at 81 years old. According to officials 98% of those who died had an underlying medical condition.

In northern Italy, the military has been called in to help enforce the lock down to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus that is spreading so rapidly. Some of the worst hit areas are in the Lombardy region where hospitals are overflowing with sick patients.

Spain

Spain just surpassed 25,374 total cases with 285 deaths today which makes a total of 1,378 deaths. Like Italy, Spain also has a very old population, and this is definitely one explanation for the high mortality rate in the country.

80% of Madrid is expected to catch the virus

According to a Madrid city official, Isabel Diaz Ayuso, 80% of the population is expected to catch the coronavirus. She then went on to say, “They will have mild symptoms,” but then added that “it will be a problem” for the older segment of the population and those with underlying conditions, which presently makes up around 15% of the population.

Germany

Germany just surpassed 21,854 total cases with 9 deaths today which makes a total of 77 deaths.

According to Germany’s Chancellor, Angel Merkel, up to 70% of Germany’s population could become infected with the coronavirus at a news conference recently. This would be equivalent to approximately 58 million infected.

UNITED STATES

The US just surpassed 22,738 total cases with 32 deaths today which makes a total of 288 deaths for the country.

Below is a State by State breakdown of the US’ cases as of Saturday morning

Washington state was hit very hard early on with the coronavirus, and it sent shock waves around the country as it made its mark on the aging population in the state’s nursing home facilities.

New York

The hardest hit state so far in the United States is New York with over 10,356 confirmed cases and 56 deaths so far. FEMA has declared New York a ‘Major Disaster.’

75 million ordered to stay home

In the US we are already starting to see very draconian measures ordering some 75 million Americans to stay home for anything non essential to try to curb the spread of the virus.

It is clear that the best plan going forward is to practice social distancing, stay inside as much as possible and don’t forget good hygiene.
