The PRC has prepared for a “worst-case scenario” in which all Chinese journalists will have to leave the United States, said Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the Global Times. According to him, in this case, Beijing will take retaliatory measures, including against American journalists based in Hong Kong.
“From what I know, given that the US side hasn’t renewed visa of Chinese journalists, Chinese side has prepared for the worst scenario that all Chinese journalists have to leave the US. If that’s the case, Chinese side will retaliate, including targeting US journalists based in HK”Editor-in-chief of Chinese and English editions of the Global Times.
Contradictions have escalated between the United States and China over the coverage of the coronavirus epidemic in the media.
The United States has demanded that a number of Chinese state media outlets reduce the number of journalists working on American soil, resulting in the de facto expulsion of 60 journalists from the country.
China, in turn, demanded the surrender of journalistic credentials to Americans working in China for the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, which also forced US journalists to leave the host country.
