Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Democrat Nancy Pelosi on Saturday called for a law that would limit the president’s right to pardon or commune prison sentences.
Pelosi’s statement came after President Donald Trump cut his prison sentence on Friday to his friend and former informal adviser, Roger Stone. The latter was sentenced to more than three years in prison for obstructing the court as part of the “Russian investigation” of Special Prosecutor Robert Muller.
“The Court has reaffirmed the Congress’s authority to conduct oversight on behalf of the American people, as it asks for further information from the Congress. Congress’s constitutional responsibility to uncover the truth continues, specifically related to the President’s Russia connection that he is hiding”,Nancy Pelosi.
In her opinion, Trump’s decision to commute Stone’s sentence is an “act of staggering corruption.”
She noted that the ex-adviser to Trump was convicted of “serious crimes” and should be punished “in all severity of the law.”
“Carefully reading the Supreme Court decision and responsibilities for them that they lay out for the Congress, which we will abide by in the lower courts. And, again, seven to two, even the President’s appointees saying the President of the United States is not above the law”,Nancy Pelosi.
