Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance made it clear on Monday that he was conducting a criminal investigation into the financial activities of Donald Trump and the Trump Organization.
Earlier, a grand jury requested financial filings from the Trump Organization, attorneys said the request should be dismissed as politically motivated prosecution of the president.
However, Attorney Vance did not agree with them and demanded that the court reject the demand of Trump’s lawyers. In doing so, he referred to “public reports of widespread and long-term criminal activity in the Trump Organization.”
The dispute over Trump’s finances with the district attorney has been going on for a long time, but for the first time possible “criminal activity” is mentioned.
Earlier, the US Supreme Court rejected the demand of Trump’s lawyers to close the case about his finances, which is being led by the district attorney. However, the court allowed the president’s lawyers to continue their dispute with prosecutors in a lower court.
At the same time, the Supreme Court supported Trump with regard to his objections to similar demands of Democrats in Congress to provide financial documents.
