Ethereum is a public blockchain-based distributed computing platform launched July 30th 2015 by Vitalik Buterin, Anthony Di Iorio, Charles Hoskinson, Mihai Alisie, Amir Chetrit, Joseph Lubin, Gavin Wood, and Jeffrey Wilke. Ethereum was created as a response to Bitcoin’s lack of a scripting functionality, opening the doors for smart contract support and decentralised applications through its programming language Solidity. Ethereum offers a decentralized virtual machine called the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) which acts as a world computer and is Turing-complete. The Ethereum network features a native cryptocurrency, Ether (ETH), which is used as a reward for mining nodes performing computations, along with being the only currency accepted for transaction fees.
