EOS is a cryptocurrency that powers the EOS.IO protocol, an open source smart contract blockchain launched January 31st 2018 by the private company block.one. After publishing the initial whitepaper in 2017, the protocol was developed by block.one and released as open-source software on June 1st 2018. Before the release of the blockchain protocol, one billion tokens were distributed using ERC20 tokens hosted on the Ethereum protocol. Over $4 billion was raised through the ERC20 token sell of EOS. Later in September of 2019, block.one settled with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission for charges related to the unregistered ICO, paying a penalty of $24 million. Daniel Larimer, the CTO of block.one, is known for his involvement in the decentralized exchange Bitshares and decentralized social media platform Steemit.
