World Markets: Report for March 31 2019

-

Overview of today’s trading day

Major US indices ended in the red today after a series of gains in the last few days. The Dow (-1.85%), S&P 500 (-1.51%), and the NASDAQ Composite (-0.95%) each sank as the COVID-19 virus has been forcing over 3 billion people to self-isolate worldwide. The S&P/TSX (+2.27%) was the only index out of the Americas group to end in the green today.

Over in Europe, more news regarding business closures emerge as the virus is having a devastating impact on even the biggest businesses. With COVID-19 forcing more car plants to close, more than 1 million European car industry workers are being directly effected. Despite the news, European indices closed in the green with the FTSE (+1.95%) leading the gains.

In Asia, countries such as China are claiming life is returning back to normal – even though the World Bank has now urged East Asia and Pacific countries to act now in order to mitigate economic risks. Indices such as the Hang Seng (+1.85%), the KOSPI (+2.19%), and the Sensex (+3.62) made significant gains, while indices such as the SSE (+0.11%) inched by.

As for commodities, Gold (-3.15%) saw a swing down falling under $1600 – a level it has been fluctuating above and below in recent months. As for oil, prices saw a slight increase as US and Russia agree to talks in order to stabilize the energy market.

The top 3 cryptocurrencies by market cap, Bitcoin (+1.51%), Ethereum (+1.51%), and Ripple (+1.73%), each saw a slight increase in the past 24 hours.
