World Markets: Report for April 8 2020

Overview of today’s trading day 

As the Federal Reserve’s money printer continues working overtime, markets are responding as planned with steady increases amid a time where productivity is hardly existent. The COVID-19 pandemic still continues to effect governments, businesses, and people around the globe with no little to no sign of things changing anytime soon.

In the Americas, the Dow (+3.44%) led the gains today followed closely by the S&P 500 (+3.41%) and the Bovespa (+2.97%). Each of the five indices in this group managed to end the day in the green, marking another day where markets are slowly inching their way back to where they were before the pandemic began.

Over in Europe, only one of the five indices listed within managed to end in the green, being the CAC (+0.10%). The rest finished off the day in the red, with the FTSE (-1.44%) suffering the biggest loss followed by the SMI (-0.86%).

As for the APAC region, only one of the six indices saw an increase, finishing off the day with the Nikkei (+2.13%) in the green. The biggest losses out of this group were experienced by the Hang Seng (-1.17%) followed by the KOSPI (-0.90%).

As for commodities, Gold (-0.25%) is back to being sub $1700 after breaking this price level just days ago. Silver (-1.79%) and Platinum (-1.62%) also ended in the red, marking a day of decline for precious / industrial metals. As for oil, Brent (-0.06%) saw a slight decline while Crude (+11.00%) experienced an enormous percentage gain.

On the crypto front, each of the three cryptocurrencies included within this report slightly climbed within the last 24 hours. Bitcoin (+0.27), the world’s leading cryptocurrency in terms of market cap, saw the smallest gain today. As for Ethereum (+0.59%), just over half of a percent was realized since yesterday. Lastly, Ripple (+1.52) experienced the largest gain of just over one and a half percent.
