World Markets: Report for April 7 2020

-

Overview of today’s trading day

Yet another day goes by where the COVID-19 pandemic continues to effect daily lives across the globe. Along with lives being effected, COVID-19 has crept its way into essentially every financial market and continues to be the catalyst for extreme volatility. However, with the Federal Reserve freely printing money each and every day to inject into the financial system, a smooth trendline up is being created after markets experienced a huge fall due to the virus (as it should have). However, with productivity still nearly at a complete halt, markets continue to artificially climb, leaving all logic behind and disregarding the dangerous consequences printing this much money can have.

Indices around the world performed well today, with only the top three US indices ending in the red today along with the S&P/ASX. Leading in the Americas group today was the Bovespa (+3.90), followed by the S&P/TSX (+0.24%). The other three indices saw losses ranging from -0.15% to -0.33%.

Over in Europe, each of the indices included in this group ended in the green today. The FTSE (+2.93%) led the gains today, followed closely by the DAX (+2.79) and Euro Stoxx (+2.21%). Switzerland’s SMI (+0.55%), which has been mostly leading gains throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, performed the worst today out of this group. Nonetheless, the SMI still ended in the green.

As for the APAC region, India’s Sensex (+8.97%) shot up unexpectedly after consistently ending in the red for quite some time. The Sensex led the gains for this group by far, followed by the Hang Seng (+2.12%) and SSE (+2.05%). The S&P/ASX (-0.65%) was the only index to end in the red in this group today.

As for commodities, Gold (-0.56%) continues to fluctuate around the $1700 level it just recently broke. Other metals, such as Silver (+1.01%) and Platinum (+1.11%), both saw an increase in price today. Oil continues to fluctuate around the $20-$30 dollar range, with investors still waiting on news regarding OPEC and any sort of deal regulating oil supply.

Each of the three cryptocurrencies listed within also saw modest gains today. Bitcoin (+0.14%), the largest cryptocurrency in the world, saw the smallest gain today compared to the second and third largest cryptos by market cap. Ethereum (+2.42%) experienced the largest gain in the past 24 hours, while Ripple (+1.03%) rose in price just over one percent.
