World Markets: Report for April 13 2020

-

Overview of today’s trading day:

After a 3-day weekend, another trading week has started with a mixture of markets closing in the red and green. Some markets, however, remain closed due to the Easter holiday. The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to slow down everyday life and therefore the economy as well. Billions of people around the world are still under some form of quarantine and / or practicing social distancing, resulting in people staying home and limiting contact with each other. The longer this continues, the higher the chance we feel a devastating effect economically, as the bandaid of printing money can only last for so long.

In the Americas group, 2 of the 5 indices ended in the green today. The Bovespa (+1.03%) led today followed by the NASDAQ (+0.46%). Suffering the biggest loss today was the Dow (-1.37%) closely followed by the S&P 500 (-1.04%).

In Europe, markets remained closed due to the Easter holiday, therefore data is not available for today.

Over in the APAC group, two of the six indices were closed today. The rest of the four indices ended in the red, with the Nikkei (-2.33%) and KOSPI (-1.88%) decreasing the most. The SSE (-0.49%) was the best performing market today out of those that were open.

Gold (+0.69%) and Platinum (+0.87%) both saw increases today, with Gold back above the $1700 level and even possibly testing the $1800 level soon. Silver (-2.11%) on the other hand saw a significant decline today. As for oil, Brent (+1.97%) experienced an increase while Crude (-0.31%) slightly decreased.

As for Crypto, Bitcoin (-4.77%), Ethereum (-5.49%) and Ripple (-3.61%) each experienced significant declines. This knocked Bitcoin back to sub $7000, while Ethereum is sub $160 now.
