World Markets: Report for April 1 2020

-

Overview of today’s trading day

Yet another trading day ends with markets reacting to ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing countries to take drastic steps for both the economy, and safety of citizens. While some effects of the pandemic, such as staying inside, are being experienced now, many economic ones are going to begin happening soon.

In the US, President Donald Trump said Americans should prepare for what is going to be “a very painful two weeks”, referring to the increase in COVID-19 cases. After said announcement, indices such as the Dow (-4.44%) began declining. Each American index within this report ended in the red.

In London, UK Business Secretary Alok Sharma urged banks to “repay the favour” to citizens after taxpayers stepped in for the 2008/2009 crisis. The favor he’s referring to: lending to small businesses as many, even large sized ones, are struggling today to maintain operations. Furthermore, Germany’s manufacturing sector, a sector their exports heavily rely on, plunged to a low that has not been seen since the 2008/2009 crisis. Each European index within this report ended in the red.

Over in Asia, some of the economic effects of the COVID-19 virus are beginning to take effect. China’s ports and shipping firms are preparing for another huge shock, as demand from the west falls amid the ongoing pandemic. Each APAC index within this report, aside from Australia’s S&P/ASX (+3.58%), ended in the red today.
