Overview of today’s trading day

Markets today ended mostly in the red as the coronavirus pandemic continues to have a major effect on everyday lives around the world. After three consecutive days of ending in the green, American indices such as the Dow, S&P 500, and the NASDAQ composite ended deep in the red today. Canada’s S&P/TSX and Brazil’s Bovespa followed suit and also ended in the red.

In Europe, each of the five selected major indices also ended in the red after today’s trading day. This comes after more negative news of the coronavirus, such as British Prime Minister Boris Johnson testing positive for the COVID-19 virus.

Over in the APAC region, four out of the six selected indices managed to end in the green today. Countries such as China have been reporting a significant decrease in the spread of the virus, even claiming that some days have resulted in no new cases being reported. This is good news considering the drastic effect the pandemic has had on financial markets across the globe.

Commodities, along with most major indices within this daily report, also seem to be in the red after today with the exception of one: Platinum (+0.08%). The other four, especially both Brent (-5.85%) and Crude Oil (-4.47%), are significantly in the red.

As for cryptocurrencies the top two by market cap, Bitcoin (-0.02%) and Ethereum (+0.74%), did not change much in a 24 hour period. Ripple (+11.04%) on the other hand, saw a huge double digit percentage increase. It’s quite evident that world markets are going through a rough patch when major indices are more volatile than cryptocurrency.
