Financial News: Report for May 19

Overview of today’s trading day:

In the Americas, four out of the five indices ended in the red today, with the only one ending in the green being the S&P/TSX (+1.70%) at one point seven percent. The worst performance from this group was experienced by the Dow (-1.59%), with bears dragging the price down over one and a half percent. Next was the S&P 500 (-1.07%) and the NASDAQ (-0.54%), losing over one percent and half a percent respectively. Not even the money printers could keep indices in the green today.

Indices in Europe declined mostly, with three out of five ending in the red come market close. The biggest increase from this group today was by the SMI (+0.32%), which gained over a quarter of a percent. Next up was the DAX (+0.15%), which gained roughly half the amount of the SMI. On the other hand, the worst performance from the Europe group was seen by the CAC (-0.89%), which fell nearly one percent.

In the APAC group, all six indices ended in the green today, with bulls leading most of the indices to gain over one percent. The biggest gain was experienced by the KOSPI (+2.25%), with a two and a quarter percent increase. Next up was the Hang Seng (+1.89%) and S&P/ASX (+1.81%), with both gaining over one point eight percent by market close. The weakest performance from this group was seen by the Sensex (+0.56%), which still managed to gain over half a percent, which is more than the best performing index in the Europe group today.

Metals including Gold (+0.87%), Silver (+2.30%), and Platinum (+2.61%) all experienced increases today, with the last two gaining over two percent each. As for oil, Brent (-0.37%) experienced a slight decline while Crude (+0.76%) saw a gain just over three quarters of a percent. This brought oil prices to around $34 and $32 per barrel respectively.

On the crypto front, each of the three cryptos included within slightly ended in the red. Bitcoin (-0.59%) fell over half a percent, which resulted in a $57 drop. Ethereum (-0.47%) saw a similar drop that was just under half a percent, resulting in the computing platform losing roughly $1 in price. Lastly, Ripple (-0.49%) also saw a similar drop of roughly half a percent, resulting in the price declining by $0.001.
