The rising concern about air pollution, particularly in the winter months, has prompted Sustainability Mobility Network (SMN) to conduct a survey to gauge public sentiment towards transitioning last-mile delivery companies' fleets to electric vehicles (EVs). The results of this survey are significant as they shed light on the growing demand for EV transition among consumers and underscore the urgency for brands associated with some of the e-commerce giants to shift their operational strategy.
Last-mile deliveries have become an integral part of our daily lives. With online shopping becoming increasingly popular, more and more products are being delivered right to our doorsteps. However, while this offers immense convenience, it also contributes significantly to increasing levels of air pollution due to exhaust emissions from delivery vehicles.
To understand public perception towards this issue and measure the scale of demand for a transition towards cleaner energy sources like electric vehicles (EV), SMN conducted a comprehensive survey in Kolkata and Asansol—two major cities in West Bengal that are bracing themselves for winter-related pollution woes.
According to those conducting the process, there is widespread dissatisfaction amongst consumers regarding air quality issues linked with last-mile deliveries. The findings revealed that 79 percent of respondents in Asansol and 71.7 percent of respondents in Kolkata felt it was crucial for delivery companies to conform with the state government's EV transition timelines and requirements.
These figures demonstrate not only consumer awareness about environmental challenges but also their active involvement in seeking solutions by advocating greener alternatives such as electric vehicles, which can drastically reduce carbon footprints compared to conventional fuel-based transportation modes.
Dum Dum MP Sougata Roy commented on these findings, stating, "Rising air pollution levels coupled with climate change implications make these insights extremely relevant today." He further added how the Bengal government has been proactive in addressing such concerns, which reflects positively within its citizenry, who show increased understanding about emission issues related to frequent cityscape sightings involving delivery vehicles.
He emphasized how essential it is now more than ever for companies to heed their consumer demands and take swift action in mitigating emissions by accelerating the transition towards electric vehicles.
In conclusion, it is clear that a significant percentage of residents in Kolkata and Asansol are urging last-mile delivery companies to shift towards EVs as an effective measure against air pollution. This public demand, coupled with government regulations, should ideally stimulate these brands involved in delivering goods for e-commerce giants to make this transition sooner rather than later.
This survey has successfully highlighted how crucial the role of public perception can be when it comes to influencing operational changes within businesses, especially those directly impacting the environment. It underscores how essential transitioning towards more sustainable modes of transport like electric vehicles is not only from an environmental standpoint but also from a consumer satisfaction perspective.
