The Canadian government has demonstrated its commitment to cultural organizations in Prince Edward Island by allocating $590,000 in funding from the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund. Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, made this announcement on behalf of Pascale St-Onge, Minister of Canadian Heritage.

Prince Edward Island is renowned for its dynamic arts scene, which serves as a tourist attraction and a platform for local talent. The island boasts various cultural organizations that provide workshops, mentorship programs, and activities designed to inspire individuals across all demographics. However, these cultural spaces require regular maintenance and upgrades, including new equipment, to remain appealing and relevant.

One organization set to benefit from this funding is FilmPEI, based in Charlottetown. It will receive $20,000 for facility renovations, including electrical upgrades, as well as acquiring specialized equipment like digital storage space. These improvements will allow FilmPEI to not only better serve its members through access to updated technology, but also manage information more effectively while improving studio capacity.

In addition to FilmPEI's improvements, they are committed to maintaining operations at full capacity during renovations while striving to attract new users, including those from diverse backgrounds who have been traditionally underserved.

Other beneficiaries include the Confederation Centre for the Arts ($350k), Under the Spire Music Festival ($200k), and the P.E.I. Arts Guild ($20k).

Pascale St-Onge commented on how Prince Edward Island serves as a hub of cultural activity, showcasing talented performers throughout the year. She highlighted how organizations like FilmPEI create conditions that allow aspiring artists and filmmakers to collaborate, thus gaining the exposure required for success within their respective industries.

Sean Casey echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing how Prince Edward Island's culture stems from history, coupled with geographical features populated by vibrant residents whose contributions make up an exciting arts sector, setting filmmakers up for success irrespective of their chosen ventures.

Rob Riselli expressed gratitude to Canada Cultural Spaces Funding, stating that it had enabled FilmPEI to streamline processes, making it more efficient for employees while simultaneously serving members better. He noted that the support they have received has allowed them to grow and support individuals within the film industry across Prince Edward Island.

Established in 1978, FilmPEI, formerly known as Island Media Arts Co-operative Limited, supports media artists by providing resources for independent production, along with dissemination and presentation. The organization provides a platform for the exchange of ideas, skill development, and access to essential equipment, including post-production facilities.

2018 saw FilmPEI expand into a larger facility with a production studio and sound stage editing suites, among other features, to become P.E.I.'s first interdisciplinary media arts cultural center. This new hub now serves as an essential training ground, facilitating workshops, rehearsals, and exhibitions for independent media arts and wider cultural sectors in P.E.I.

The Canada Cultural Spaces Fund supports renovation, construction projects, acquisition, specialized equipment, and feasibility studies related to cultural spaces in order to improve the physical conditions of spaces used for art, heritage, culture, and creative innovation.
