The climate change, which is a global environmental concern, has now started to cast its shadow on the clothing markets of south Punjab. The erratic weather patterns have left customers in a state of confusion about what clothes to buy for which season.

This uncertainty is not just limited to the consumer's end; it has also impacted agriculture significantly. Unpredictable agricultural seasons are leading farmers into financial distress and causing a decline in cloth sales, especially in rural areas.

Muhammad Saqib, who runs a shop in Khanewal, shared how climate variations are affecting consumer behavior. "There's been too much variation in the weather patterns," he said. This unpredictability makes people unsure about when they should start shopping for new seasonal clothes. As a result, many customers are delaying their purchases until they can predict more stable weather conditions.

With winters arriving late and summers becoming unpredictable, consumers find it challenging to decide whether they should invest in summer wear or winter clothing. These uncertainties have disrupted typical seasonal sales cycles, making it difficult for retailers like Saqib to manage stock effectively.

Climate change's devastating impact on agriculture further exacerbates this situation as crops get severely damaged due to erratic rainfall and other extreme weather events. Farmers' resources have drastically shrunk because of these changes, forcing them to cut down on non-essential spending, including buying new clothes.

Rana Abdul Waheed, another shopkeeper at Old Shujabad Road, echoed similar concerns about his business, which had seen a significant drop in sales despite investing Rs 20 million into it. He lamented, "Nowadays we only make around Rs 5,000 most days.". He further added that this affects not just him but also his six employees, whose livelihoods depend on the income from his business.

According to Waheed, inflation coupled with financial strain faced by farmers means many locals simply cannot afford new clothes anymore.Farming is the heart of this region," he explained; "when farmers suffer, everyone feels the pinch." He pointed out that many people are dealing with losses in agriculture and simply don't have money to spend on new clothes.

Inflation is another key factor that has compounded this situation. As essential goods become more expensive, families prioritize basic needs like food and shelter over shopping for clothes. This leaves shopkeepers like Waheed with unsold stock, struggling to cover overhead costs, including wages for their employees.

Climate change's impact goes beyond environmental issues; it affects all aspects of life, including clothing markets, as seen in south Punjab. Until solutions are found, these problems will only continue to grow, affecting even more people along the way.
