Underwater optical wireless communications (OWCs) represent a groundbreaking technology capable of facilitating high-speed mobile transmission in aquatic environments. This innovative system leverages photonics to transmit information through water; however, its effectiveness is often hampered by absorption, scattering, and turbulence that are inherent characteristics of underwater environments. These factors can significantly distort the intensity, polarization, and phase of light, which are crucial for effective communication.

The impact of these adverse effects on underwater OWCs performance has led researchers to explore various beam types such as orbital angular moment (OAM), partially coherent beams, and structured beams. The goal is to find methods that can overcome the challenges presented by an underwater medium, thereby enhancing signal strength and communication speed.

Further advancements in this field include the development of sophisticated techniques designed to optimize the performance of underwater OWC technologies. Some notable examples include microLEDs, vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), and photodetectors.

This Special Issue aims at discussing these related technologies within the context of underwater OWCs while covering a wide range of topics, including propagation dynamics in an aquatic environment, scintillation index analysis, bit error rate (BER) considerations, as well as advancements in photonics technologies specific to submarine mediums.
