The Beijing auto show, Auto China 2024, is currently underway, and it offers a glimpse into China's vision for the future of the automobile industry. The event features 117 new models ranging from cutting-edge innovations to subtler novelties. One of the most notable presentations was by Xiaomi, a leading Chinese smartphone maker that recently ventured into car manufacturing.
Xiaomi announced it had received over 75,000 orders for its first car model, the SU7, within four weeks since its launch. The vehicle has a list price range of $29,800–$41,400. This move by Xiaomi reflects an emerging trend among consumer technology companies aiming to integrate their customers' lives across all devices, including cars.
Beatrix Keim, the China director at the German auto research center CAR, explains this concept as "the third place," where people spend significant time in addition to their home and office spaces. This approach resonates well with consumers in digital-centric societies like China, where e-payments are common and convenience takes precedence over privacy concerns.
Huawei is another tech giant that has followed suit, while Apple considered but later dropped similar plans earlier this year.
Chinese automakers have taken this idea further with Zeekr unveiling Mix, an electric vehicle whose interior can transform into a small room when parked, allowing passengers to enjoy activities such as playing card games or having meals inside it. Stefan Sielaff describes Mix as more than just a car; he calls it "a lifestyle capsule" or "an iPod on wheels.".
Further highlighting the rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) in China is Chery Automobile Co., which, despite pledging continued development of gasoline cars, also showcased two EVs alongside two hybrid models at the auto show.
However, not all manufacturers are focusing on elaborate designs and high-tech integrations; Volvo under Geely aims for simplicity, offering user-friendly vehicles equipped with easy-to-use sophisticated sound systems and tablet screens focused on providing clear interfaces and reassuring intelligent experiences.
The recent boom in China's EV market has significantly impacted the gasoline-powered car market. However, hybrid vehicles, which have lagged behind EVs, are now being viewed as a growth opportunity, with 2.6 million new hybrids sold last year accounting for roughly half the number of electric cars sold.
Chinese EV manufacturer BYD is targeting high-end consumers with its latest off-road SUV, the U8, priced at $150,000 and featuring survival-focused designs like built-in satellite phones for use beyond cell phone range and an optional drone system available for an additional $13,800.
In conclusion, Auto China 2024 showcases multiple facets of the future automobile industry as envisioned by Chinese manufacturers, from high-tech integrations to a focus on user-friendly designs and growing interest in green alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.
