Simple Scientific Trick Boosts Basketball Performance

In the high-stakes world of basketball, a free throw can make or break the game. However, a recent study by the University of Basel suggests that an unexpected factor may significantly increase the chances of scoring: supportive physical touch from teammates. 
 
The research team led by Christiane Büttner at the Faculty of Psychology delved into this fascinating aspect using data from 60 games played by women's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) teams in America. The researchers analyzed over 800 instances where two free throws were given due to fouls incurred while attempting to score. 
 
Büttner and her colleagues observed how often players received supportive touches, such as shoulder taps or hand squeezes, before taking their shots. They then calculated whether there was any statistical correlation between these gestures and successful attempts at scoring. 
 
Interestingly, they found that after missing an initial shot—aarguably one of the most stressful scenarios in basketball—rreceiving physical support from teammates increased players' chances of making subsequent successful shots significantly. This finding illustrates how simple actions like a pat on the back might help manage stress levels during intense situations effectively. 
 
"This indicates that teammate support is vital when your stress level has already spiked because you've missed your first attempt," says Büttner, summarizing her findings. 
 
It's worth highlighting here that many matches are decided by free throws, which makes them highly stressful for players who have all eyes on them during those moments. A failed first attempt only adds more pressure; however, it seems like something as small as a pat on their backs could give players just enough confidence boost to turn things around for their teams!
