Vive la France! The Atlanta Hawks have selected Zaccharie Risacher as the No. 1 pick in this year's NBA draft, making him the second consecutive Frenchman to be chosen first overall. This comes after last year's selection of Victor Wembanyama by San Antonio, who went on to win Rookie of the Year. Although Risacher doesn't bring with him towering heights or hype like his predecessor, he was seen by the Hawks as the best choice in a draft viewed as lacking elite talent.

This marks an unprecedented trend where, for two consecutive years, someone who didn’t play at an American college has been picked first in the draft. It also solidifies a historic moment for France, which now joins America as the only country to have three players selected within the top ten picks of an NBA draft.

French basketball fans had to burn their midnight oil due to the time difference between Paris and New York, but it seems they were rewarded with history being made right before their eyes. Among those staying up late was undoubtedly Risacher himself, who mentioned that he knows many from his homeland who remained awake all night just to watch.

The momentum began when Wembanyana became last year’s No. 1 pick overall and continued when Atlanta chose Risacher this year. Other French talents like Alex Sarr (No. 2) and Tidjane Salaun (No. 6) were soon picked, respectively, by Washington and Charlotte, while Pacome Dadiet went to the 25th position.

Meanwhile, other notable selections included Stephon Castle going fourth to San Antonio, followed by Donovan Clingan being picked seventh by Portland, both representing UConn; Kentucky also secured two top-10 picks.

In baseball news, Shohei Ohtani continues his record-breaking RBI streak with the LA Dodgers while contemplating another shot at the Home Run Derby during All-Star festivities scheduled for July 15th at Globe Life Field in Texas.

Off-court issues are also being addressed as recommended by an outside review of the U.S. The Tennis Association's safeguarding system suggests 19 specific ways to protect players from abuse, such as sexual misconduct.

The Minnesota Timberwolves picked Terrence Shannon Jr. at No. 27 overall after he was recently found not guilty in a rape case that overshadowed his final season at Illinois.

In other NBA news, OG Anunoby is set to stay with the New York Knicks on a five-year contract worth over $210 million, while two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray remains undecided about whether he will compete at this year’s grass-court Grand Slam tournament following recent surgery to remove a cyst on his spinal cord.

International football saw Venezuela advance to the Copa America quarterfinals with their victory over Mexico thanks to Salomón Rondón's penalty kick goal in the 57th minute.

Finally, USA Gymnastics seems poised for a better future ahead of the 2024 Olympics after undergoing a major overhaul in the wake of the Larry Nassar scandal. They are now focusing on increased transparency and support, hoping it will re-establish trust among athletes, coaches, and gym owners alike.
