Sentient Labs, a Singapore-based start-up, has successfully raised $85 million (S$115.6 million) in its seed investment round. The blockchain-powered open-source artificial intelligence (AI) development platform aims to use the funds to accelerate its growth and further develop its innovative AI technology.

The funding round was led by Peter Thiel's Founders Fund, Pantera Capital, and Framework Ventures. A plethora of strategic investors also participated in the round, including Arrington Capital, Canonical, Dao5, Dispersion, and Delphi Digital, among others.

Founded just two years ago in January 2024 by Polygon Labs co-founder Sandeep Nailwal along with academic professionals Pramod Viswanath and Himanshu Tyagi, Sentient Labs is committed to creating an open-source platform for developers that rewards their contributions towards developing AI tools such as chatbots and enterprise software.

Nailwal shared his concerns about the centralization of AI with Bloomberg News, stating, "There is a lot of anxiety around centralized forces running away with AI." He believes crypto can disrupt this sector, allowing players like Sentient Labs to compete against these 'centralized behemoths'.

With plans already underway for a testnet launch during Q3 2026, Sentient Lab’s system leverages technology from Polygon to reward engineers who contribute tasks essential for training AI models, such as data labeling and refining.

Despite raising substantial capital through their initial funding round, it appears operational details are still being refined, according to Nailwal, who stated, "We have not completely formalized how that structure will play out."

However, Nailwal remains optimistic regarding the potential impact on the AI industry, concluding, "If we crack the idea, if we crack the technology behind it, this has the potential to disrupt the AI industry completely."

Sentient Labs' business model revolves around aligning incentives between developers contributing towards developing various aspects of artificial intelligence while integrating blockchain into their operations. Their mission is to democratize AI, making it accessible and beneficial for everyone.

The startup also plans on expanding its team by hiring experts in the fields of AI research and blockchain engineering. They are looking at establishing partnerships with leading academic institutions as well as industry players to further their growth and development.

This approach ensures that developers are rewarded for their contributions while creating a more decentralized AI ecosystem where power isn't concentrated among a few entities. It leverages blockchain technology, providing transparency, security, and efficiency in transactions.

With this new round of funding, Sentient Labs aims to accelerate the development of its open-source AI platform. The company’s ultimate goal is to disrupt the centralized forces dominating the AI industry, thereby fostering an environment conducive to innovation and inclusivity.

Sentient Labs' successful seed investment round underscores investor confidence in both its vision for a more equitable distribution of power within the artificial intelligence sector and its potential ability to deliver on this promise through innovative use of blockchain technologies combined with top-tier expertise from across academia and tech industry veterans alike.
