Global Politics: Most Dangerous Era Since 1939

The world's geopolitical landscape is fraught with tension and potential conflicts that could have catastrophic consequences. Israel, for instance, finds itself locked in a life-and-death struggle with Hamas and Hezbollah—both proxies of Iran. The possibility of these conflicts escalating into an all-out war cannot be dismissed.

Meanwhile, President Xi Jinping has vowed to reunify Taiwan with China before 2030—by force if necessary. Simultaneously, tensions are rising in the South China Sea due to territorial disputes.

Another hotbed of conflict lies in Eastern Europe, where Russia's sense of national grievance following the dissolution of the Soviet Union is playing out in Ukraine. This situation was further complicated by the role played by Western powers like the United States and Europe as well as Russian President Vladimir Putin’s personality.

In February 2014, after mass demonstrations supported by ultra-nationalist elements demanded that Ukraine join the EU, pro-Russian president Yanukovych was ousted from power under US support, leading to secessionist rebellions among his Russian-speaking supporters in the Donbas region, which only worsened when Russia invaded Crimea.

Fast forward to February 2022, when Russia launched its invasion on Ukraine expecting an easy victory but met stiff resistance from Ukrainians led by their charismatic leader Volodymyr Zelensky instead. Despite this unexpected setback, Putin agreed to Israeli-brokered peace talks based on Ukrainian neutrality, but they fell through allegedly because UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson informed Zelensky at Biden’s behest not to negotiate with “war criminal” Putin, resulting in a costly war causing huge casualties and financial losses while also receiving unprecedented foreign aid mostly from USA & EU countries who want nothing short than a Ukrainian victory against Russia despite dire warnings from Putin about nuclear retaliation against NATO forces helping Ukraine militarily.

Putin’s worldview seems deeply rooted within eschatological beliefs about restoring Imperial Russia's grandeur, even if it leads towards annihilation, since he believes that martyrs will be rewarded with paradise. This religious fervor coupled with a sense of humiliation from the West has led him to take extreme measures in Ukraine.

On the other hand, Israel is dealing with growing isolation due to its conflict against Hamas and Hezbollah, backed by Iran, that might soon have nuclear capabilities while also facing continuous missile attacks that are causing mass evacuations. The situation seems bleak as no solution appears on the horizon.

In Asia, China’s aggressive territorial claims in the South China Sea and its intention to forcefully reclaim Taiwan by 2030 have caused tensions among neighboring countries, who fear being next on list if Taiwan falls. Moreover, Biden’s open support for Taiwan against Chinese invasion further complicates matters as it risks starting a war that could easily spiral out of control.

Each of these potential conflicts involves nuclear-armed states reflecting global power shifts away from US unipolar domination towards multipolarity, where new players like China, Russia, India, and Iran will compete for influence amid increasing incompetence and division within Western powers.

While there’s hope that common sense prevails in preventing any catastrophic event, including possible global nuclear war, which, although less than 1%, still constitutes the greatest threat ever faced by humanity, far exceeding climate change risk, this should serve as a stark warning about our precarious position in the world today.

Remembering how we overcame seemingly insurmountable challenges during the mid-1980s gives us hope that peaceful resolution can be found even when things seem direst. There are many unknown factors or advancements like artificial general intelligence that may yet alter the course of events, providing much-needed respite from current troubles, but until then, let us cherish every moment we have because, despite present difficulties, ours is still the best generation ever lived so far.
