The Empty Stocking Fund, a project of The Gazette Charities Foundation and El Pomar Foundation, is launching a new initiative to shine a light on the innovative work being done by health and human services nonprofits in the Pikes Peak region. Starting this year, one different nonprofit will be chosen annually to join 20 other local organizations that benefit from donations collected during the holiday appeal.

Deb Mahan, executive director of The Gazette Charities Foundation explained that through this program they aim to "increase the scope and impact of the Empty Stocking Fund campaign in a strategic way." She added that it's an opportunity to recognize either burgeoning nonprofits or existing ones with novel programming.

Applications for agencies wishing to be considered as beneficiaries under this inaugural Innovation Award must reach Deb Mahan at [email protected] by July 10. Eligible applicants would include health and human services nonprofits supporting individuals or families in El Paso or Teller counties. These entities should have 501(c)(3) designation with establishment within two years or planned innovative programming if already established.

Interested organizations are required to submit various documents including audited financial reports for two previous years, letter confirming their nonprofit status, summary of organization’s impact or annual report along with agency board members’ list.

On selection each year for receiving the Innovation Award, an agency will become entitled to proceeds from yearly disbursement. Existing beneficiary agencies range widely in mission; from offering support like food, housing etc., programs aiding homeless teens/adults and domestic violence victims/abused children as well as providing medical treatment for indigent patients among others.

The Empty Stocking Fund was initiated back in 1984 aiming originally at providing toys/clothing/supplies during the holiday season but later transitioned into a community fundraising platform benefiting Pikes Peak region nonprofits after decade-long evolution.

Administrative expenses are completely covered by several foundations ensuring every donated dollar goes directly to participating agencies. The Fund’s last year campaign celebrating its 40th anniversary raised an impressive $1,605,905 million.

Donations have seen steady rise over the past seven years with record highs in the last five years. Mahan attributes this growth curve to community goodwill and recognition that these contributions directly assist frontline organizations aiding local people in need.

"We just celebrated the 40th anniversary, and people know they can give one time and have a broad impact in the community and help health and human services agencies," Mahan said.

With the introduction of the Innovation Award, she expressed eagerness for partnership with an agency providing critical services addressing some pressing social issues within their community. This year's Empty Stocking Fund campaign will commence on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28 running till Jan.25, 2025.
