Shares of Chalice Mining Ltd. (ASX: CHN) have been catching the eye of investors with a strong gain on Tuesday, following a significant announcement. The mineral exploration company disclosed that Hon. Roger Cook MLA, the Premier of Western Australia and Minister for State and Industry Development, has awarded Strategic Project status to its Gonneville Project under Western Australia's Lead Agency Framework.

This award signifies formal recognition of the strategic value that the Gonneville Project holds due to its potential in delivering substantial economic benefits as well as aiding energy transition efforts for Western Australia and the region at large.

The Gonneville project is situated on Chalice-owned farmland approximately 70 km northeast of Perth. It is currently in the pre-feasibility stage but boasts considerable potential given its capability to produce a unique blend of critical and strategic minerals essential for decarbonization and urbanization processes, such as nickel, copper, cobalt, palladium, and platinum. Regulatory approvals are being sought simultaneously.

With this new designation as a Strategic Project by JTSI (Department of Jobs, Tourism Science & Innovation), it will facilitate high-level support, including regulatory approvals along with infrastructure requirements. This includes environmental approvals, which will now be subjected to an expedited assessment through the newly established Green Energy Assessment Unit.

Chalice Mining’s CEO Alex Dorsch expressed his pleasure over this development, stating, “Chalice is pleased to receive this formal recognition from the Western Australian Government demonstrating our project’s strategic importance.” He added that "Gonneville stands out as one of Australia's first major Platinum Group Element discoveries," emphasizing also its position among "the largest critical and strategic minerals projects within the state.".

He further appreciated JTSI's continued case management support while noting how being recognized under the Lead Agency Framework would lead towards greater engagement with all departments within the WA Government during their progress towards securing regulatory approval processes.

Dorsch was particularly encouraged about having environmental clearances supported by the Green Energy Assessment Unit, which was formed as part of Premier Cook's initiative announced last year to streamline the assessment process for green energy projects.

The team at Bell Potter continues to see significant value in this ASX mining stock. They put a speculative buy rating and $5.15 price target on its shares late last month, an estimate that is considerably higher than where they currently trade.

This development comes as welcome news for Chalice Mining Ltd., signaling increased confidence from both government bodies and investors alike. The formal recognition of Gonneville Project’s strategic importance coupled with streamlined approval processes could potentially accelerate the pace towards full production while also attracting further investment into the company.
