KN Udupa, director of the Institute of Medical Sciences at Benares Hindu University in Varanasi, conducted a study on the psychological effects of practicing yoga asanas. His subjects who regularly performed yoga reported several positive outcomes related to stress reduction:
1. Decreased anxiety levels: Participants experienced lower levels of anxiety after engaging in a regular yoga practice.
2. Decreased rate of mental fatigue: Even when faced with stressful situations, individuals who practiced yoga showed reduced mental fatigue compared to those who did not engage in any form of relaxation or mindfulness practices.
3. Improved focus and concentration: Yoga was found to enhance cognitive function and improve attention span among participants.
4. Increased feelings of well-being: Those who incorporated yoga into their daily routine reported higher levels of happiness and contentment.
5. Dominant alpha waves correlate with enhanced relaxation and feelings of creativity. Alpha waves are associated with deep relaxation states where creative thinking is heightened.
One key aspect that sets yoga apart from other forms of exercise or relaxation techniques is its emphasis on connecting mind-body-breath awareness during each movement or posture practiced on the mat. This mindful approach helps individuals stay present in the moment while releasing any pent-up emotions or tensions stored within their bodies.
Two specific asanas highlighted by Udupa for stress relief include Yogamudra asana (universal supplication posture) and Bhujang asana (cobra pose). These postures target different areas within the body, but both aim to bring about a sense of calmness and rejuvenation.
Yogamudra involves surrendering oneself completely while focusing on spinal cord breathing, which helps refresh both the body and the brain.
Bhujang focuses more on opening up the lungs and bringing peace via backward bending motions coupled with deep breaths.
In addition to physical postures like these two mentioned above,Ujjayi pranayama can also play an important role in reducing stress through controlled breathing techniques.
