Terry Erickson, a retired executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater La Crosse, has dedicated his life to serving others and promoting positive change. However, life took an unexpected turn when he was informed that his mother had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. This news brought about a sea of emotions as they witnessed her transformation from a vibrant and caring person into someone they no longer recognized.

Alzheimer's disease is not just a personal tragedy; it represents one of America’s largest underrecognized public health crises. It currently stands as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, where one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer's or other types of dementia. Presently, over 60 million Americans are living with this condition, and projections show that by 2050 this number will rise to 12.7 million.

These statistics serve as stark reminders that lifestyle choices often play significant roles in maintaining brain health, which can reduce the risk for cognitive decline.

1) Regular exercise: Cardiovascular workouts increase blood flow to both the body and brain, enhancing memory and thinking abilities.
2) Healthy diet: Consuming fruits and vegetables regularly improves cognitive performance.
3) Adequate sleep: Uninterrupted sleep patterns benefit physical health while helping clear waste from the brain.
4) Social engagement: Staying connected with family members promotes cognitive health.
5) Stress management: Chronic stress can lead to severe conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, memory loss, and increased risk for dementia.

Despite these challenges posed by Alzheimer’s disease, there is reason for hope on the horizon. The Alzheimer's Association is making strides in research aimed at earlier diagnosis and improved treatment methods that may eventually realize their vision—creating a world free from all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s.

In line with this mission, Terry Erickson remains committed to finding a cure for this public health crisis through active participation as a state board member, working diligently alongside fellow advocates and striving relentlessly towards achieving their shared vision.

A call to action is extended towards everyone willing to join the race in finding a cure for Alzheimer’s. The Walk to End Alzheimer's event taking place on Saturday, September 21 at Riverside Park offers an opportunity for all interested parties to contribute their bit towards this noble cause. Registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by an opening ceremony at 9:45 a.m., with the walk commencing at 10:00 a.m. onwards.

Erickson’s journey as coach, teacher, motivational speaker, and active high school and NCAA athletics official has always been characterized by service towards others. His current endeavors reflect that same spirit of dedication and commitment now channeled towards helping create a world without dementia.

In conclusion, Terry Erickson stands as a testament of resilience amidst personal adversity, using his experience to not just cope but transform it into a catalyst for positive change within society through advocacy, research, and awareness against one of the most pressing public health challenges of our time: Alzheimer’s disease.
