The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lisbon, situated in 1648-028 Lisboa, Portugal, is renowned for its extensive research and treatment programs focusing on various areas, including eating disorders. This faculty has a keen interest in understanding the psychotherapeutic processes involved in treating such conditions and evaluating therapeutic outcomes.

Eating disorders (EDs) are serious mental health issues that often emerge during adolescence. They can lead to severe physical and psychological complications like depression, low self-esteem, electrolyte imbalances, bone density loss, and even increased mortality rates. These disorders not only predict adult obesity but also impact cognitive development, fertility issues, and increase the risk of substance abuse among adolescents.

Over the past decade, using DSM-5 criteria that introduced avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and binge eating disorder (BED), significant strides have been made towards understanding these disorders among young people. The faculty aims to explore clinical features of EDs further by examining assessment strategies employed for diagnosis as well as intervention approaches used for treatment through a special issue dedicated to this subject matter.

This special issue will provide an all-encompassing perspective on adolescent EDs across a spectrum of weight categories, from anorexia nervosa's low-weight presentation to sub-threshold presentations observed in obesity cases. It will delve into varied psychopathological profiles associated with EDs, thereby broadening our current knowledge base while simultaneously highlighting innovative practices integral to managing and treating these conditions effectively.
