Own-Brand vs. Name-Brand Condoms: Safety Comparison

Sensoa, the Flemish center of expertise for sexual health, has conducted a survey on condom use and argued that young people should be given access to condoms at cheaper rates or even for free. The study reveals that many youths consider condoms as too expensive, which sometimes results in them not using them during intercourse. This issue was investigated by VRT Radio's consumer affairs program 'WinWin', questioning whether an own-brand (cheaper) condom is as safe as those produced by big brand names.

The data collected from Sensoa's website users regarding their condom usage aligns with previous findings from the World Health Organization (WHO). Eva Koppen of Sensoa highlighted that the responses of young participants aged between 16 and 29 were particularly notable. Many expressed concerns over the high cost of condoms, leading some to engage in unprotected sex.

Recognizing this alarming trend, Sensoa emphasizes the importance of consistent condom use in preventing unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Their survey revealed that almost half of teenagers who had been sexually active within six months prior to taking part used a condom, while only one-third among those aged 20-29 did so.

The price range for condoms can vary greatly; unbranded or own-brand versions are available at approximately 20 cents each, whereas leading brands may charge up to 2 euros per piece. A common misconception is that cheaper options are less reliable, but according to Koppen, "Every condom marketed in Belgium has to meet high quality standards imposed Europe-wide."

She explained further why branded products tend to cost more: suppliers invest heavily into marketing campaigns promoting brand awareness, which increases costs substantially. Additionally, renowned brands offer an extensive range catering to different sizes, thicknesses, and flavors, providing customers with numerous choices compared to the limited variants offered by own-brands.

Despite these explanations validating price differences among various brands without compromising safety standards, there remains an important consideration when choosing a condom. Koppen suggests that the broader the range, the higher the chances of finding a condom best suited to one's needs, which ultimately enhances user experience and safety. "A well-fitting condom will not tear so easily or slip off," she notes.

This observation implies that while cost should be addressed to encourage more young people to use condoms consistently, it is also essential for them to find a type they are comfortable with and fits well. This combination would potentially increase their likelihood of using condoms regularly, thereby reducing risks associated with unprotected sex.

In conclusion, Sensoa's findings underscore an urgent need for policymakers and health organizations alike in Belgium and beyond to consider measures addressing high costs associated with condom purchase, particularly among young populations, whilst educating them about safety standards across different brands.
