We are delighted to announce that Atmosphere, a leading scientific journal published by MDPI, is now compiling an exceptional collection of papers in the all-important field of "urban air pollution and health." This comes at a time when urbanization continues to surge globally, giving rise to new and pressing urban issues that require urgent attention from the scientific community.

Among these challenges is the triple crisis of escalating urban pollution levels, loss of biodiversity, and climate change. These crises not only pose immediate threats but also have cascading hazards with long-term implications. Urban living has become synonymous with increased exposure to multiple environmental stressors, such as traffic-related air pollution, the transformation of landscapes, and heat islands linked to cities' rising temperatures.

In response to these growing concerns, there's an imminent need for a new branch of science—one that fosters multidisciplinary collaboration and adopts a transdisciplinary approach towards understanding complex urban problems.

For this special issue on "Urban Air Pollution & Health,"  we invite research papers focusing on relationships between various types of urban exposures (air pollution, noise pollution, heatwaves, etc.), including effects associated with lack or scarcity of greenspace and extreme weather conditions, and human health repercussions. We particularly welcome studies exploring impacts related to criteria pollutants like fine particulate matter or emerging or unregulated pollutants such as ultrafine particles or black carbon.

Moreover, we encourage submissions centered around toxicological indicators, characteristics of particulate matter contributing to oxidative stress (e.g., oxidative potential), and epidemiological outcomes concerning atmospheric pollutants within urban contexts.

Our objective in curating this special issue is to publish insightful contributions from researchers across disciplines, either through original works or review articles. All selected pieces will be compiled into a printed book edition, providing comprehensive insights about current state-of-the-art research in the urban pollution and health domains.

Prospective authors can submit their manuscripts online at www.mdpi.com after registering or logging in to the platform. Post-registration, you'll find a submission form on the website where manuscripts can be submitted until the announced deadline. All submissions will undergo a rigorous pre-check, followed by a peer-review process, before final acceptance for publication.

We invite research articles, review pieces, and short communications. For planned papers, authors can send a title and brief abstract (around 100 words) to our editorial office for announcement on this website.

Please note that previously published manuscripts or those under consideration elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers) are not eligible for submission. Atmosphere follows a single-blind peer-review mechanism, ensuring each manuscript is thoroughly reviewed. Authors can find detailed guidelines and other relevant information about the submission process on the Instructions for Authors page.

Before submitting your work, please visit the Instructions for Authors page to understand detailed guidelines about manuscript preparation and submission. The Article Processing Charge (APC) applicable is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). We urge authors to ensure their work is well formatted and uses good English language; MDPI's English editing service can assist with language polishing prior to or during author revisions.
