Next week, the brightest minds in stroke prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and research from around the globe will gather at the Adelaide Convention Centre for a significant international conference. The Asia Pacific Stroke Conference is co-hosted by the Australian and New Zealand Stroke Organisation (ANZSO) and the Asia Pacific Stroke Organisation. It aims to assemble leading experts and consumers in stroke-related fields to present their research findings as well as share innovative ideas that could enhance global stroke patient care.

Professor Timothy Kleinig, President of ANZSO and Chair of this year's conference, emphasized that this event is an excellent platform to display cutting-edge innovations emerging in stroke treatment both within Australia and globally.

This year's theme, 'Transcending Borders,' encapsulates their aim to bridge gaps between nations, merge research with implementation strategies, and blend pre-hospital care with medical, neuro-interventional, and surgical specialties while also connecting health professionals with service users. Professor Kleinig expressed his excitement over hosting such brilliant minds who are pioneering advancements in stroke treatments challenging conventional norms.

The conference anticipates attracting more than 600 attendees where groundbreaking studies will be showcased, including advances in acute brain imaging after strokes; potential aids like virtual reality and video gaming for treating strokes; benefits of physical activity and sleep on post-stroke fatigue; mental health support improvements for survivors of strokes along with families; and new pathways simplifying the transition from hospital care to rehabilitation.

Stroke events affect over 40,000 Australians annually, leaving nearly half a million survivors living within communities. Internationally, one out of four people is likely to experience a stroke during their lifetime. Fresh data about costs associated with strokes borne by Australian society and economy will be unveiled at this conference by the Stroke Foundation.

Dr. Lisa Murphy, CEO of Stroke Foundation, stated that conferences like these provide an exciting opportunity for stakeholders involved in managing strokes, allowing them to exchange ideas that can potentially redefine approaches towards its prevention or treatment, besides enhancing recovery outcomes post-stroke incidents.

She added, "This is a huge opportunity to have Australasian leading stroke experts and innovators come together in Adelaide, share ideas, showcase the latest advancements in stroke care, and highlight the real-world impacts for survivors of stroke, their carers, families, and the broader society."

The conference is expected to generate new insights that could potentially impact Australia's health system positively.
