5 Foods and Drinks Diabetics Must Avoid - Times of India

Diabetes is a rapidly growing health concern in India. As per the World Health Organisation, approximately 77 million people over the age of 18 years are suffering from diabetes in this country alone. The first step towards managing this condition effectively often begins with making the right dietary choices. Certain foods and drinks can cause sharp spikes in blood sugar levels, making them particularly risky for those suffering from diabetes. 

 

One such food group that can wreak havoc on a diabetic's glucose levels is sweets. Traditional Indian sweets like gulab jamun, jalebi, and ladoos are laden with sugar and refined carbs which result in rapid spikes in blood sugar levels. Over time, these sugary delights contribute to insulin resistance as well. A study published by the Indian Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism points out that high consumption of sweet dishes significantly increases one’s risk of developing diabetes. 

 

Drinks also play a significant role when it comes to controlling diabetes. Popular beverages like lassi or fruit juices loaded with extra sugars lead to quick elevations in blood glucose levels while offering little nutritional value – an unhealthy combination for diabetics. Regular consumption of such beverages has been linked to an increased risk of acquiring diabetes within the Indian population according to research conducted by the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research. 

 

Another common staple that poses risks for diabetics is white rice and other refined grains because they have a high glycemic index (GI). This means they get digested quickly causing rapid spikes in blood sugar levels - posing similar threats as maida (white flour). BMJ’s research reveals diets rich in white rice were associated with an increased chance of type 2 diabetes especially amongst Asian populations. 

 

Deep-fried snacks should be avoided too due their high content of unhealthy fats and refined carbohydrates leading not only to weight gain but also insulin resistance - two factors detrimental for diabetics' health management plans. International Journal Of Diabetes In Developing Countries’ research highlights the adverse effects of consuming fried foods on insulin sensitivity and weight management in individuals with diabetes. 

 

Lastly, full-fat dairy products like malai, full-fat cheese and full-cream milk are a no-go for diabetics due to their richness in saturated fats. These could increase insulin resistance while also contributing to higher cholesterol levels - complicating diabetes management further. The Journal of Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders reports that a high intake of saturated fats is linked to an increased risk of insulin resistance and poor glycemic control in diabetics. 

 

In conclusion, managing diabetes effectively requires making informed dietary choices. Limiting the consumption of sweets, sugary drinks, white rice or other refined grains along with deep-fried snacks and full-fat dairy products can go a long way towards maintaining stable blood glucose levels thus keeping diabetes under control.
