Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, two of Britain's most celebrated actors, are set to star together in a remake of the classic dark comedy about divorce, The War of the Roses. This marks the first time that these acclaimed performers will be sharing the screen, much to their delight and anticipation.

The original 1989 film starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a married couple whose separation spirals into an extreme display of bitterness, resentment, and even comedic hostility. With Colman and Cumberbatch stepping into these roles for the remake titled "The Roses,"  fans can expect an equally fiery performance from this new pairing.

Last week, both stars shot their initial scenes in Salcombe, a picturesque resort town located in Devon. Dressed fittingly for her role as Ivy Rose, Olivia Colman is donning a navy-and-white striped sweater with wide-leg pants, while Benedict Cumberbatch plays her husband, Theo Rose, sporting a blue-grey jacket.

"The Roses" takes its title from the family names of the central characters, but it also cleverly references England's historic Wars of the Roses: conflicts between rival factions vying for control over England’s throne during late medieval times, just like how material possessions become contentious objects amidst Ivy’s and Theo’s outrageous divorce proceedings.

This reimagined version comes under Jay Roach's direction, who has previously worked on comedic hits such as the Austin Powers series, while Poor Things writer Tony McNamara penned its script. Notably different than DeVito's 1989 version, where he not only directed but also portrayed a divorce lawyer character that reunited him with his successful Romancing the Stone co-stars, Douglas and Turner.

Adding more talent to this promising project includes Ncuti Gatwa (the recently announced Doctor Who), along with American comedians Andy Samberg and Kate McKinnon making up part of an impressive ensemble cast that breathes fresh life into this iconic tale.

Described as more of a re-imagining than a strict remake by the producers at Searchlight Pictures, The Roses will delve into the seemingly perfect lives of Theo and Ivy Rose. A couple with successful careers, admirable children, and an enviable sex life only to reveal that beneath this facade lies simmering resentments and competition waiting to explode when Theo's career dreams shatter.

The War of the Roses was a standout film in its time due to its dark humor approach towards such serious topics as divorce and materialism. With Colman (known for her brilliant performance in "The Crown") and Cumberbatch (the charismatic Sherlock Holmes) taking on these challenging roles while backed up by talented supporting cast members, it’s safe to predict that “The Roses” promises an exciting blend of drama and comedy set against the backdrop of marital discord.

In conclusion, fans are eagerly awaiting this fresh take on a classic story. With two titans like Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch leading the cast, anticipation is high for this modern interpretation of one of Hollywood's most iconic tales about love gone awry.
