Newfoundland and Labrador is renowned for its thick, enveloping fog that seems to permeate everything in sight. The Tuff brothers, Bill and Kenny, have found a unique way to harness this natural weather phenomenon by converting it into the main ingredient for their signature vodka.

Their company, Fog Distillery Co., captures the fog from the Harbour Grace area of Newfoundland and transforms it into water through an innovative process. This idea was sparked after Bill had made connections within the beverage industry who enlightened him about how crucial water quality is when creating top-notch vodka.

The 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires subsequently played a pivotal role in inspiring this venture. As smoke-filled skies darkened his home in St. John's one day, Bill’s wife remarked on her newfound appreciation for their typically wet climate and never-ending fog, thus igniting a light bulb moment.

Harvesting the seemingly elusive substance took over a year of research due to its complex nature. Unlike rainwater collection, which involves direct capture into containers or barrels, procuring fog requires specialized knowledge coupled with intricate equipment; nets are positioned strategically at locations known for high wind activity or elevated clouds where they can catch passing fog effectively.

As per Kenny’s explanation, these nets condense incoming fog droplets into water, which can then be collected conveniently at each net's base—this passive method of harvesting not only allows them to produce environmentally friendly vodka but also reduces labor-intensive processes significantly, according to the United Nations Climate Technology Centre.

With their current setup capable of producing around 60-70 thousand cases annually, there arises an intriguing question—what does such uniquely sourced vodka taste like? To quote co-founder Kenny Tuff: "it tastes delicious." Official descriptions suggest subtle notes of vanilla and citrus with a crisp finish—a tantalizing prospect indeed!

Now available in NLC stores across Newfoundland and Labrador as well as LCBO outlets throughout Ontario—the brand has been met with astounding enthusiasm since hitting shelves. The journey from erecting their first test nets to seeing their products on store shelves took less than six months, reflecting the speedy and explosive growth of Fog Distillery Co.

The Tuff brothers have no plans to slow down either; they're set to appear in the Season 19 premiere of CBC's Dragon Den airing on September 26th, further establishing them as an exciting new player within Canada's thriving spirits industry.

In essence, Fog Distillery Co. is a testament to innovation and environmental sustainability—proving that even something as ubiquitous and overlooked as fog can be transformed into a unique selling proposition. So next time you're sipping your favorite cocktail or savoring a neat vodka shot, remember—you might just be tasting Newfoundland’s famously thick fog!
