In recent reports by Counterpoint Research, HarmonyOS has been noted to make up 17 percent of China's smartphone market in the first quarter of this year. This puts it ahead of iOS, which holds a 16 percent share, and makes it the second-largest operating system in China after Android, which dominates with a whopping 67 percent. Huawei proudly shared that its HarmonyOS ranks as the runner-up in the Chinese market. The company further boasts about having registered over 6.7 million developers and more than one billion ecological devices on their platform.
The early adopters have voiced out positive impressions regarding HarmonyOS NEXT, an updated version of HarmonyOS. One user from Beijing named Gai Xiangbin praised its smooth operation without any noticeable lag while also appreciating its power efficiency—an essential feature for him since he frequently uses his phone for calls and WeChat use.
Furthermore, Gai commended how Huawei redesigned the entire interface to be flatter and more minimalistic, making it easier on the eyes and simpler to navigate through various applications.
Despite these positive reviews, some users are hesitant to switch immediately due to limited app availability on HarmonyOS Next compared to other established systems like iOS or even older versions of HarmonyOS itself.
Li Siquan from Shenzhen said that he prefers sticking with his current operating system until there is significant growth in apps available under this new platform. Similarly, another resident, Zhang Ting, expressed her reluctance towards changing her iPhone 12 because she feels comfortable using iOS given certain apps she needs are readily available there.
However, not everyone is resistant towards change; a Russian resident living in Shenzhen welcomed this development, stating that it would provide consumers with fresh options whilst promoting competition amongst tech companies leading better product quality overall.
On top of being seen as a viable alternative OS option among Chinese consumers, others view Huawei's achievement as symbolic representation reflecting China’s strength in scientific and technological advancements globally—instilling national pride among the populace.
Ye Qingguo, another resident of Shenzhen, expressed his support for Huawei and its products as a form of patriotism. He emphasized that Chinese people should back their home-grown products to show solidarity and boost domestic technological progress.
In conclusion, HarmonyOS's achievement in surpassing iOS in China is indeed a significant milestone. However, it also highlights the challenge ahead: gaining widespread acceptance among users accustomed to established operating systems while expanding its app ecosystem to match those competitors. As more developers join the platform and create diverse apps catering to various user needs, HarmonyOS Next could potentially increase its market share further—not just within China but perhaps globally too.
